When I finally met a few other stepmoms, we created a Stepmom Support Group, of sorts… We meet for breakfast or lunch about every month to share, to vent, to get support. During one of these gatherings, we decided there needed to be a Stepmom Bill of Rights. Below, is what we came up with… I’d love to hear what others think about our creation. Did we leave anything out? Should we change anything? All opinions, as long as they are constructive, are welcomed. 🙂
The Stepmom Bill of Rights
1. “There is always crap you need to suck up”
2. “If you feel like you’re last, you probably are. It’s okay to be last sometimes, just not always.”
3. “Mom” is just a label
4. Learn to live with the role of ambiguity- you’re not mom, aunt, or friend
5. Learn to bite your tongue, sometimes until it bleeds.
6. Learn to let go, and give it up to God
7. Accept the fact that you have all of the responsibility with none of the authority
8. There’s no such thing as “step-grandma.”
9. Learn to love & appreciate the unique place you hold in your stepchildren’s heart
10. Believe that you do matter
